At the end of our first meeting with Shan, she told us that in a week we would have so much time on our hands that we wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves. My husband and I laughed in disbelief and exhaustion and closed the door.
That night we nervously began our sleep training journey. Rhodes was 11 weeks old and had been awake for 11 weeks with the exception of a few 20 minute naps here and there. We spent most of our time bouncing him and walking around the house aimlessly, while he cried and struggled to fight the sleep we so desperately wanted him to give in to. We laid him down in his bed that first night, bathed, full bellied and awake. We nervously turned on his sound machine and began swaddling him. The room was dark and my husband was wearing noise canceling headphones. We were prepared for the worst night of our lives, but we were determined to help our little guy sleep. The first 3 minutes were promising he was settled and only moved a bit….then he began the fight. He cried and screamed and writhed around while staring at us and wondering why we weren’t picking him up. We sang to him and rubbed his belly and cried along with him. To our surprise it did not go on long and he eventually fell asleep. We quietly left the room and flopped into bed thinking it would only be minutes before he woke up again and we would have to start the process all over again. He slept for 6 hours the first stretch, I fed him and changed him and he went back down with no crying and slept another 6 hours!
The days following were incredible. We called Shan the magical wizard in our household and wondered if she put some sort of spell on him haha. He slept a lot the first couple weeks and rarely cried when we put him down. He was happy during his awake times (So were we) and his personality was starting to show through. Shan was so right, we had so much time on our hands, we didn’t know what to do with ourselves. It was nice to be able to spend more one-on-one time with our 2 year old who was definitely feeling neglected and stressed.
Rhodes is 4 months now and sleeps 12 hours through the night and has 3 solid naps a day. He is incredibly happy and rarely cranky. I am able to read his sleep signs and he is able to peacefully put himself to sleep every time, prop free. Shan and her sleep knowledge has changed all of our lives! We are so grateful for her help and will sing her praises to everyone!
